Calendar of Events

 

TAP The Potential, Disability Awareness Month, has been celebrated in Milwaukee each October since 2003. This year, more than 30 area organizations sponsored a variety of activities to raise public awareness of the talents and issues of people with disabilities in our community. The Milwaukee County Office for Persons with Disabilities provides coordination for these activities. Activities planned for 2007 include:

 

September 28 - MSOE Students on Wheels -- Milwaukee School of Engineering students from the schools of engineering, architecture and nursing will share how their day in wheelchairs impacts their environment and daily activities. October 1 - October 31 - Art Exhibit at Mitchell International Airport -- Mitchell International Airport will again host this year's month-long art exhibit featuring work from artists with disabilities. The Kick-off will take place at 10:30 a.m. on October 1 in Concourse C. Light refreshments will be served. October 1 - October 31 - Guerilla Artist Strikes -- Performing and visual artists with disabilities will "strike" locations throughout the community during the month of October. Performances include a vocalist, guitarist, harpist, storytelling, mouth painter, puppetter, choirs, drum corps and more. October 1 - 31 - Spina Bifida Awareness Month -- The Spina Bifida Association is kicking off a national awareness and fundraising campaign, Adopt-a-Ghost, for October as part of Spina Bifida Awareness month. October 8 - Elected Officials on Wheels -- Mayors throughout Milwaukee County will spend their workday in a wheelchair. Their day will end at the Intergovernmental Cooperation Council meeting for a short debriefing. October 8 - Sculpture Installation -- Goodwill participants will unveil their garden sculputre at Wil- O- Way Underwood front entrance at 10 am. The sculpture was funded by a grant from Harley Davidson. Wil- O- Way Underwood is located at 10602 Underwood Pkwy., Wauwatosa. October 9 - County Executive on Wheels -- County Executive Scott Walker will spend his workday in a wheelchair beginning with the Seven County meeting in West Bend. October 9 - UW-Milwaukee Architects on Wheels -- UW-M Architecture students taking the Architecture & Human Behavior Course will incorporate experiencing their environment in a wheelchair. October 14 - October 20 - Milwaukee County Transit Bus Pass -- Milwaukee County Transit will issue a Tap The Potential bus pass with the theme: "This Land is Your Land, Is It My Land, too?"  (return to top)

October 15 - White Cane Day -- White Can Day recognizes that the white cane and guide dog are symbols of freedom and independence for blind people and those who are visually impaired. Wisconsin law requires drivers to stop at least 10 feet from a pedestrian carrying a white cane or using a guide dog, who is attempting to cross a street, even if the person may be violating any of the laws applicable to pedestrians.  (return to top)

October 17 - Cammy Draheim Guerilla Artist Strike -- From noon to 2 pm, Cammy will present a poetry reading and display her art at the Marian Center Lobby Area, 3211 S. Lake Drive, Milwaukee. October 17 - Disability Mentoring Day -- Based on the "Take Your Daughter to Work Day," the National Disability Mentoring Day is held on the third Wednesday of October each year throughout the USA and is coordinated by IndependenceFirst for the four county southeast Wisconsin area. Middle school, high school and college students are matched with area employers for a career exploration/job shadow day in their career field of interest. In the past, businesses that have participated have been both large and small, including Harley-Davidson, the Air Force Refueling Division, the Milwaukee Repertory Theater; Sentry Foods, and many more. October 18 - Barbara Leigh Guerilla Artist Strike -- From 11 am to noon, Barbara will present her entertaining and informative presentation entitled "Humor and Healing" to Milwaukee School of Engineering nursing students at the CC building, 1025 N. Disability Awareness Month - Free Bookmarks

Free Bookmarks Laminated bookmarks have been created utilizing artwork from artists with disabilities. They will be distributed at TAP the Potential events and are available to the public in small quantities.
